Have a belly full Christmas
- Ash and Dede
Ash: Buka is one of the places everyone goes to. You go there, your mama goes there, your aunt and best friends mom goes there. It’s where you go when you’re looking for some local cuisine, but still want a somewhat upscale restaurant vibe. The prices aren’t too high though, so don’t worry too much about your pocket.
Dede: Buka is for all you bougie people who want local food but don’t want to go into the trenches. I love their fresh mango juice and plantain and beans. The beans are for gains. You’ll definitely meet someone you know and it’s centrally located as well. They on google maps so your uber driver can find it if he decides to on his data.
Ash: My top picks for Buka are the pepper soup, the beans and plantain, their waakye isn’t too bad either. Honestly, you won’t be disappointed by anything Buka has to offer.
Chez Clarisse, Osu
Ash: My favorite thing about Chez Clarisse has to be the time. Your food really does come out in record time.
There’s an Accra Craves blog about Chez Clarisse, check it out here. My favorite thing here has to be the Tilapia and Attieke. I’m an Nzema girl, so you know I have to rep my attieke.
Dede: I love love love Chez Clarisse. Tilapia, Attieke and fried plantain for the win. The key is to eat them altogether not as separate dishes if you get what I mean aka combine the tilapia, Attieke and fried plantain before sending it to your stomach. Thank me later
Ash: You all know I swear by Mazera by now. I eat here almost all the time now that I work in Osu. P.S. Daddy is paying the bill so it works out fine because they are never cheap. So I’m going to give you my order list in order of what I eat most/completely love and adore and cherish
Banku and okro
Banku and Tilapia
Kontomire with ripe plantain and yam (I detest apem, you’re entitled to your opinion - I guess)
Beans and Plantain
Honestly, Mazera is just lit! Check out our review here.
Dede : The Banku and Okro Soup.
Pork Office, Spintex Road
Ash: Looking for the best pork in Accra this Christmas, look no further. Honestly, don’t go anywhere else. It’s an absolute waste of time. Order their pork with jollof or with banku or with fried yam. Just order their food. Let me know just how amazing it was.
Dede: The jollof at pork office is lit like Bic. We have a post on it which can be found hereeee. Single grained and flavorful and that's kinda a big deal. Call to order so when you get there you are just scooping your food. Add one malt on the side because it's Christmas and you my dear friend deserve it.
Gold Coast Restaurant ,Airport
Dede: The yam balls at Gold Coast are amazing. Truss me Daddy on this one. They also have a buffet every Sunday and the options are unlimited.
Ash: They have a live band Friday nights which is really off the chain. It's fun filled with local jams and just the right kind of vibe for a chill night with friends. Their oxtail is great and their jollof won't leave you disappointed.
Ash: I promise you we will have a waakye party soon. It’s in the works, infact let’s call it waakye wars. Vote yes in the comments section if you’re down for a waakye war! Cuz I am.
Dede: As you vote yes, just know that we’ll be calling you to help us plan it so vote wisely.
For waakye, these are the top 5 waakye joints around Accra. Nothing beats them. You will not have a waakye disappointment this Christmas if you stick to these locations.
Dede :These spots are definitely not on google maps, that I can tell you for free so may the odds ever be in your favor in finding them.
Ash: If you do have data though, google maps can help! Just click on the spot you'd like to try!
Adabraka (off Kojo Thompson Highway) - expect long lines, about a 30minute wait
Nyaho clinic rd, by the railway line - our staple waakye
Flash photos (Danquah Circle) - late night waakye, for all you after club folk
Palm Wine Junction (Trade Fair) - she's there morning and afternoon, rumor has it she closes at 5pm
The Newbie’s Club
So this is really one of the just came on the scene places. They’re a brunch spot in the am and a sports bar in the PM. But they're a restaurant. This plush bar is located on the first floor of the Alto building, Villagio. The food is your standard bar/brunch menu but it is spiced all the way up with flavors and textures and so much yumminess. Try their spicy ribs, the meat is ever so tender and falls right of the bone and the flavor is out of this world. Their gingerbread pancakes have a similar effect on you, the pancake is light and fluffy and baked to perfection. And definitely don't miss out on their burgers, they serve a remarkable 250g patty, which unlike most places is spiced up and ever so tasty. Their drinks are just as lit as their food menu. I love the playful approach they took to naming their drinks, forever here to be a passionate player!
Counter Burger, Accra Mall
Dede: I love menus that are so full that you don't know what to choose. I can spend 15 minutes on a menu. They have a build your own burger which is quite cool. The nutella milkshake is real nutella not chocotella lol
Ash: The menu is actually quite extensive, the options never end. Their BBQ Bacon burger really is the real deal. They're an authentic burger shack serving up some crab cakes, floats, shakes and some really good burgers.
Pizza Guy, Sandbox Labadi
Ash: Hands down top 3 pizza joints in Accra. And HE IS SOO AFFORDABLE! Ghs40 for a truly artisan pizza. He offers a one size feeds all pizza, which I believe mirrors a standard large pizza. He infuses local flavors into his pizzas and the crust is honestly just made so perfectly! I must admit that I prefer the kpakposhito base, it gives the pizza a unique burst of heat but it's never overwhelming. Try out his goat pizza, His pepperoni, His Sandbox special.. just try it and stop eating the bread and stew you've been eating from *cough*cough*
Dede: Kpakoshito base for the win. Look no further. Actually, look further by reading the post, here
The Cedar Garden, Kempinski Hotel
Dede: We were invited to Kempinski Gh for their Media Blogger Event and I got there right in time to catch the flight to Lebanon annex ; The Cedar Garden, their Levantine Cuisine. This area is an authentic introduction to everything from the middle east.
Ash: Flash back to when I was in Morocco.
Dede: This really is shisha heaven with the wide array of Shisha flavors and pots, the fruit juice shooters are absolutely yummy and the perfectly marinated shish kebabs are a definite must try.
Ash: We hear their Sunday breakfast at the Papillon is everything and then some and it's definitely on our must try list this Christmas season.
Tea Baa, Nyaniba
Ash: My favorite thing about Tea Baa is the interior. It’s way too aesthetically pleasing, simple and modern but playful and still just so tasteful. And don’t get me started on the food or the tea. I love how Dedo (the owner, she’s amazing - make sure you introduce yourself) keeps changing her menu and testing our tastebuds with flavors and textures and just ooh la la your tummy this christmas and head on over to tea baa my darlings! Dedo and her team will blow your tongue, teeth, throat and tummy out the ball park.
Dede: You will love the space. It’s small and cute but not claustrophobic and Dedo immediately makes you feel at home. They have games as well. Rumor has it, I’m the ludo champion over there. They have so many stuff planned for this bronya so be sure to check their instagram page plus PLUS my favorite dj in the whole wide world plays there! DJ Riskyyyyy
Chix n’ Ribs, osu et east legon
Ash : I don’t know how we still don’t have a review on Chix n’ Ribs. Probably because I eat there so much and haven’t had any time to write about it. Too busy eating it. Looking for authentic Southern fried food. Please please check out Chix n’ Ribs.
Try their spicy fries, complete belly orgasm or their suicide fries if you’re daring enough. Their Jack Daniels sauce is truly amazing and their bang bang sauce is almost as good. Alot more spicy than sweet but still taste buds will be so happy with you. Oh and the one no one talks about, their chicken and waffles - that’s a must try!
Dede: You guys! Chix n’ Ribs has to be one of my favorite fast food joints in Ghana. You have to try their burgers, Jack daniels wings and the old bay fries. Just get everything because tis the season to be jolllllllyy! Fa la la la la la la la la (actually counted those la’s)
Marwako, labadi, spintex rd et abelemkpe
Ash: Marwako is one of the food chains around Accra plating up chicken dishes, sharwama plates and sandwiches. Marwako has always been a sharwama joint but recently I indulged in their fried rice and chicken and it’s a quick bite you won’t regret. Their fried rice is tasty and the quality of their fried rice is a lot more tasty and consistent than a number of other spots in Accra. You definitely won’t regret it. My favorite thing to get here is their mix sharwama sandwich, it’s good stuff.
Dede: I don’t know how Marwako made it to the list *sideeye* but y’all have to take Ash’s word for it.
Cafe Kwae, One Airport Square
Ash: You know I’m a big fan of their prawn spring rolls and their very berry iced tea. I do long trips just to try their very berry iced tea, you should too. They have some super yummy chicken wings and sliders and other quick nibbles. They have some pretty good salads, very refreshing and will keep you on your healthy tip. We have a post about it, here.
Dede: I love the space and the owner, Yvette. The Very Berry and Cucumber mint are so refreshing and she just started a brunch menu, doesn’t get better than that. Wun peh wei na wu peh dien kraaa. To translate for my foreign cravers, If you don’t like this, what do you like?
Smoothy’s Nourish Lab, Osu et East Legon
Ash: This is hands down one of my top three places in Accra, only because I absolutely love smoothies and it’s my go to for lunch whenever I’m on a diet. Which is at least once a week. There are two locations, one in Osu and another in East Legon. My favorite smoothie is the Berry Colada, its number 16 on the list, it’s a mix of berries and coconut and all so yummy. Their chicken wraps are pretty legit too. My favorite thing about Nourish Lab is the fact that you can make your own smoothies, not like go to the kitchen and make them, but you can dream up whatever fruit mix recipe and they’ll make it, at no added cost. Trust me, you’ll love Smoothy’s and chances are you’ll keep going back.
Dede: Definitely take out at the Osu branch. It has a dungeon feel to it that doesn’t vibe well with meee but that's just by the wayyy. My fav is numero 32 Trojan Muscle which is basically a post workout smoothie. Ask me what workout I do? Outchea trying to trick my body into gains. You’ll love their smoothies.
Ensalada, Asylum Down
Dede: The best wraps and salads in Accra. The grilled bits wrap which is bacon and chicken is fantasique. Their salads are yum yum as well. It’s a take out spot in Asylum down so please don’t excited thinking you are taking bae out. You can take her mome but you’ll eat in the car.
Ash: I tried a mint and lemon wrap and a potato salad from them once. The sauce in the wrap was a little too tangy for me, but Dede swears by them, so trust her on this one.
Monsoon Sushi, Osu
Ash: I’m one of those sushi lovers who craves sushi at least once a week. If I see it, chances are I’ll eat it. So much for being an Nzema girl, but yes, sushi has my heart. Which means when I found out how good Monsoon sushi was, I was elated. It’s the most affordable eatable sushi in fAccra. All other sushi that’s worth consuming is not pocket friendly enough to eat on a weekly basis, just saying. Check out Monsoon sushi, you won’t regret it.
Dede : I've never been. Ash didn't take me. Someone has a boyfy now and don forget about her numero uno. Are we salty? Yes, we are.
Gladys', east legon
Dede: Sweet Fried Chicken and Yam. Large x2. One for you, one for me.
Duncans, Republic Osu
Ash: Dede, Imma leave this one to you. Their honey chicken is good though.
Dede: I absolutely love Duncans. I have the babe there's number on speed dial. Honey Chicken, Samosas and Stir fry noodles. Thank me now.
The Grill Room, Cantonments
Ash: I think Grill room is such a dime piece. I love the interior and the food is absolutely amazing. It's pretty expensive, so as you carry yourself there be aware that you're gonna be paying. Try their pork belly, their shrimp salad, indulge in their aged rib-eye steak or their tender, fall off the bone lamb chops. This is where you want to take bae, I kid you not. She’ll be loving you just off the setting and the food will have her in some other kind of belly happy, face smiling, tongue twirling kind of world.
Dede: The Grillroom is the perfect date spot for you big ballers. We see you. Not everyday take bae, sometimes take you parents and thank them for bringing you into this earth or Granny and Grandpa and thank them for bringing your parents into this earth. One non alcoholic strawberry daquiri for Granny cause Granny shouldn't be boozing.
Never Go Wrong Staples
Imperial Peking (Airport Residential/Polo Club)
Ash: Hands down the best Chinese serving restaurant in Accra and the interior at the new location in Airport residential is perfect for a date or any kind of celebration really. Try out their mixed starter for two, it gives you a range of spring rolls, golden fried shrimps and fried wonton for two. It’s yummy and affordable. I love everything here, the special fried rice, the special noodles, the singapore rice noodles. Oooh! If you’re packing some bundles try their duck pancakes, it’s truly a magical savouring experience.
Dede: C’est expensive so please enter Forex Bureau before you enter here. Their duck pancake for the big ballers is the best thing on the menu. If you don’t have a date, come and pick me, I’ll go with you.
Honeysuckle, Ring Road et East Legon
Ash: Honeysuckle is your standard sports bar or a pub if you will. Their serving up pints and streaming all the sports games. But most importantly, you know honeysuckle is packing some of the best chicken wings in Accra. Watching a match, having game night or just looking for some yam and chicken wings for a lazy afternoon. Honeysuckle is the place you want to be at. Their garlic, honey glazed, spicy and regular wings will have you going gaga. They also serve up pretty standard meals like lamb and burgers, cumberland sausages with mash. I love honeysuckle. They too have two locations now, there’s one on Ring Road and another at the An’C mall in East Legon. It’s definitely one of the chill spots you should check out this season.
Dede: Apparently, a little birdie told me that Honeysuckle is cheaper in the day. I haven’t confirmed it but he was so confident so I believe. The honey chicken wings with fried yam or fries is the best thing on their menu. Don’t look far. The East Legon one has karaoke night as well so you can channel your inner Beyonce. I see you, Michelle.
Coco Lounge, Airport
Ash: I probably eat here too much, no lie. But then it really is just one of your never go wrong joints but also its location makes it an ideal meet up spot no matter where you’re staying in town. Start off any meal with their wings, then move on to a coco burger or just have some chicken skewers and top it off with some coco chips and guacamole. If you’re feeling like a pizza, try their brick oven spicy beef pizza and if you’re looking for that dash of spice, request the chilli oil to shake over your pizza. Wash it all down with one one of their signature drinks or some fresh watermelon juice. Enjoy the view and celebrate with someone as they dance and sing to whoever is celebrating that day. Coco Lounge is your chill but upscale pocket friendly joint, there’s nothing not to love, the interior, the food, the service. My Alias for Coco Lounge is the tourist’s must see, so if you haven’t already, check it out this season.
Dede: Coco Lounge is a tourist attraction. If you don’t have a picture of their interior especially their lights on your social media this Christmas, did you really come to Ghana? I always get their chicken wings and their watermelon alcoholic drink. I forget the name. Try their quesadillas and you can say it’s your birthday and you’ll get a little performance but remember the cake they bring you ain’t gonna be free so understand your pocket before you make this announcement. When you are done, go upstairs to Urban Grill for dessert. The sticky toffee pudding is the best thing that happened to Stanbic Heights.
Bistro 22, Labone
Ash: This for reals is my favorite joint in all of Accra. I love their space. I love their service. I love their food. I love their drinks, I just love it all. They start you off with some bread sticks and some spreads, there’s a to die for hummus and an olive spread as well. I usually half fill myself on these before I have the chance to eat anything else. Then I move on to some halloumi cheese or a fresh yummy caesar salad. Next is the salmon with some rice and a mango chutney or their salmon carbonara. Then I finish it off with their ever so warm and homey apple crumble served with a scoop of ice cream. My mouth waters as I describe and reminisce the goodness of Bistro 22 food. This is my order, I dare you to build your own mouth watering experience at Bistro 22, I can bet you you won’t stop yapping about it. Bistro 22 is hands down one of the must try places this christmas.
Dede: Ay Ashley, I think my babe has lowkey shares at Bistro. Just here for their salmon pasta and Amaretto Sour. Try not to finish your pasta or order one to go because it taste really yum the next day.
Pinocchio, Osu et East Legon
Ash: Ice Cream on lockdown. They have two locations, one in East Legon and another in Osu. They serve a wide variety of ice cream flavors so you're bound to find something that you'll love. They have both milk based tiramisu, snickers, Ferrero rocher, your standard creamy flavors and then all the yummy, mango, lemon, passion fruit and just too many flavors sorbet. If you're trying to have an ice cream date with the girls or with the sissys or with mum, this is the spot.
Dede: They do have a wide variety of ice cream and it's not fanice. My favorite is the white chocolate one and the one that's like vanilla but is NOT vanilla. Ask them, they'll understand. They have sorbet for you lactose intolerant babies out there. Not everyday be left out of that fun.
Evive Delight, Labone
Ash: One of our most recent discoveries but man we love her stuff! Having opened her new location in Labone. Sena is baking up a whole lotta goodness! Her baileys cuppie with salted caramel meringue icing, her coffee cupcakes are everything, any and all junkies, like myself, will be dying for these. Evive Delights is the cupcake shop you should be popping into this Christmas and all year round! Her cupcakes are everything and then some!
Dede: Her cupcakes are hands down some of the best ones in Ghana. Put them in the fridge and take them out like an hour before you are ready to eat it. It's so yummy. Her brownies are chocolatey and chewy as well and now she has a shop so you can just drop by. Not everyday order order. Favs are the butterscotch, lemon and banana.
Buttercup Bakery, Tesano
Ash: Granny’s best home recipes ever! Get authentic cream cheese icing and amazing carrot cake and be amazed by the texture and flavor of cakes baked with love.
Dede: Best carrot cake in the whole wide world. No argument.
The Applepie guys, Instagram
Ash: Apple pie heaven! Like my guys!!!!! Just get some ice cream or some whipped cream and buy 6 pies for you and your fam this season! They will love you forever.
Dede: Load Love and Basketball, pop it in the microwave for about 15 seconds and add some ice cream.
Moments Chocolate, Josie Cuppa Cuppacino
Dede: My absolute favorite is the Milk Chocolate with Toffee and Himalayan Sea Salt. Guyyyys, it's so so yummy. It's the perfect perfect combination. Add it to the Christmas Hamper you are getting meee
Dream Desserts, Osu
Ash: The most amazing Aunt Sally is dishing out some apple pies, marble cake, chocolate heaven on earth cake, Christmas cake in addition to all the eye candy she serves us all year round. Please pop in and order a chocolate chip cake with some buttercream icing! It's for you if you have a sweet tooth and it must be some of the best tasting dessert I've ever had!
