Hot Chilli Pepper's... or Nah?
Dede: So, after finding out 2 of the restaurants marked on our calendar weren't open we ended up at Peppers in Labone. Peppers is on the Zanzibar road, Labone. It is on your left before Zanzibar if you are driving in the direction of the American Embassy.
Ash: On arriving, I was intrigued by the set up. It was very simple, but it had an air to it that I liked. It was calm and welcoming, a little hot, but welcoming all the same. I arrived before Dede and started taking pictures of the space, one of the waitresses swiftly walked up to me soo very concerned, “Please who are you and why are you taking pictures.” I had to quickly ask her, “please are you afraid?” I love this job.
Dede: She thought Ash worked with Anas. Google is your friend if you don't know who Anas is. She should have kept that mentality and made our experience worthwhile but alas...
Ash: The waitresses were fun, I’m not too sure they fully understand their job description though. They simply took the order, brought drinks after 20 minutes, well water so even worse, brought food, waited till we asked for the bill and voila sent us on our way. There was simply no customer service offered. Nevertheless, they were funny and entertaining so that’s something.
Dede: They were funny but completely missed the customer service memo. Now, one thing I don't understand is why at many Ghanaian restaurants there are menus filled with all sorts of dishes and drinks, then when you start to place your order they hit you with “oh madam, as for that one we don't have it.” Excuse me? So now, when I go to a restaurant I ask them what they don't have before I get too comfortable with the menu. In this case, they didn't have any juice as advertised in the menu and all they had to offer was soda aka mineral and water.
Ash: Today was our first bonding session since our long hiatus, so I wasn’t being utterly critical of the food or the service, I was more about enjoying my time with bae. lol. We ordered the chicken wings, pork and gari foto and the fried plantain. Our initial choice was the lamb, but “please madam is now bringing it,” was announced. So we settled for the pork.
Dede: It was our first bonding session but man was hungry so I focused equally on quality time as well as the food. Sharing is caring or.
Ash: The plantain arrived first and honestly they tasted a lot better than they look, although they were soaked, and I mean soaked in oil.
Dede: The plantain was honestly my favorite part of the meal. I'm team soft plantain so this was right up my alley.
Ash: The chicken wings arrived next, I cannot explain to you how much I hate old food, i.e. food that isn’t cooked today especially when it’s chicken. Definitely falls into top 3 things I refuse to eat; that fridge chicken does not sit well in my mouth. And that is exactly what they served us. I don’t even know what it tastes like. I took one tiny bite as I had a feeling it was old chicken. The taste of refrigerated chicken flooded my mouth and I didn’t look back in that direction. I will never be ordering that again.
Dede: The chicken wings were terrible. First of all, they had a funny smell to it. You know you have a problem when chicken smells like goat. Secondly, like ash said, it was old old chicken. Tasted like we were eating chicken cooked on Christmas Day. Why would you do that to me? After one bite it was all over for me. It’s a big fat no in my books.
Ash: The pork and gari foto wasn’t bad at all, the pork was a little tough to chew, but I only had about two mouthfuls. The gari foto was tasty as well, it tasted much much better when you mixed it with the pepper on the side. That pepper really did make a world of a difference in that meal. I wish the gari foto was a little more chewy, but life isn’t always perfect. It was a manageable plate, pleasant almost. I can see myself ordering it again if I was starving and not completely regretting it.
Dede: The pork and gari foto were basic. But I don't want to pay for basic food, I want it to be my worth my canines and mortar’s time for grinding that food and it wasn't. The pork, well it tasted like pork. I was hungry and so I did enjoy the pork, gari foto and plantain together. However, the food wasn't memorable. I didn't leave with a food baby neither am I writing this post dreaming about it.
Ash: Please there were no drinks available, water, fanta and bitter lemon. Choose your choice.
Dede: So I asked for ice and the waitress said “we don't have, our madam has gone out” I don't know the correlation between their madam and ice. So I asked if the madam had the key to the freezer. Apparently the madam had gone to the ice place for ice but never returned whilst I was there. So no ice for Dede. Honestly, I don't know if we went in on a very bad day but I see no reason why I should go back to Peppers.
