Secret Spice Sweet Fried Chicken
Dede : Triple Gun salute to Funsations for introducing us to one of the best sweet and spicy fried chicken in Ghana. Gladys' is in East Legon. It's on the papa's pizza road heading towards American house, it's before the Barclays bank and on the right hand side of the road. Look out for a black signboard and it's before Oceano if that helps.
Ash: This is your area spot. There’s no inside seating, by the roadside vibes, which I loved. You see them cook the food right before your eyes in two grills. It has very limited seating, so don’t go there trying to throw a party. I loved the lowkey nature of it, but seeing how we run into multiple acquaintances, I’m not sure how lowkey this joint is, perhaps more of a hidden gem.
Dede: We ordered everything on the menu, their menu has three things on it. They know what works for them and they've stuck to it. We got a large half portion spicy and half portion sweet grilled chicken, a small sweet fried chicken chicken and a large spicy pork. Your options are sweet or spicy, like I said Gladys knows what's working for them and they are sticking to it.
Ash: Food comes with two sides, fried yam and kelewele. From the menu, I knew Gladys' gon be my spot. The menu gives you no options, like us, you just order everything.
Dede: My absolute favorite was the sweet fried chicken. It was sweet but spicy, the sweetness wasn't honey or bbq sauce and my powerful taste buds couldn't decipher what it was but it was amazing. I guess it's their secret sauce. Just go and try it. The chicken sizes were actually very big, now I'm side eying all those apuskeleke chicken wings in town. You can do better. The kelewele was actually my favorite side but up till now I don't get how people eat kelewele and chicken. I feel the flavors don't combine but at Gladys I'll eat that any day. The fried yam was also fresh and crispy on the outside and airy in the inside just how I like it.
Ash: The fried yam was so fresh. And that kelewele was just so good. The sides were pretty good, I’ll give them that any day. I was originally skeptical about these sweet fried wings. I was even more alarmed when the wings arrived with a green sauce on top. I had to enquire whether it was indeed sweet. My guy, this was sweet and hot pepper, perfect balance of sweet but spicy, and not your chinese style sweet and spicy, this was local auntie Gladys’ spin and I must say it was in fact bae. It was sweet but hot, I don’t know what to liken it to because I have never tasted anything like it, but I’m guessing it’s what you will want your hot but sweet wings to taste like.
Dede: The grilled chicken was my second favorite. Since I have zero tolerance for pepper, my fingers naturally gravitated to the sweet one first. The grilled wings were tender and juicy and the sweet sauce with the chicken marinade was the perfect combo. I wished we ordered all sweet but Mama ash from the Ga hinterlands said we had to try the spicy too. Sometimes listen to your elders. The spicy grilled chicken would be amazing for our pepper lovers but it wasn't a hit for me only because I don't like pepper.
Ash: My tummy still hurts from all that pepper. Nevertheless, the wings, all of them were perfectly seasoned and spiced to high heaven, I loved the balance of flavors. I also loved the size of the wings. They were like southern style wings in size, not the mini wings you get at other places, talking about wings.
Ash: Dede didn’t eat the pork. I tried to eat it, but it was mostly just fat and it wasn’t very well seasoned. It was very basic, it will not make be making any lists ranking pork joints in Accra anytime soon. I didn’t love it, not sure I liked it even and I definitely won’t be ordering it again.
Dede: I had one pork because once again, Aunty made us order spicy. The pork was my least favorite. There was a lot of fat, it was spicy and like our pork whisperer Ash said, it won't be making any top 10 pork joints in Accra
Dede: In terms of drinks, please stay away from their lemonade and sobolo! You heard it here first. Sometimes stick to nature's liquid, water. When we heard apple sobolo, we thought fancy.
Ash: Dede said, “let’s go with apple sobolo, this is what Accra Craves is about.” Nuh uh boo. Nobody is here for that.
Dede: Right! I really took the L for you guys, The sobolo tastes like malarex please and the lemonade I have no words for that drink. These drinks shouldn't be approved by the FDA.
Gladys is super affordable, like we had to take a double look at the menu. It's unbelievable especially considering how expensive everything in Accra tends to be. They really give you value for your money
